What To Wear Allerton Garden

Located on the South Shore of Kaua'i between the Pacific Ocean and NTBG's McBryde Garden, Allerton Garden is a paradise transformed through time by the hands of a Hawaiian Queen, a sugar plantation magnate, and most significantly by an artist and architect.

Tour the garden to see towering rainforest trees with tall curving roots that grow near bronze mermaids, a grove of swaying golden bamboo, a cut-flower garden, and tropical fruit trees. Here the focus is on landscape design, but among the plantings are botanically important species of the tropics, including varieties of palms, ki (ti), heliconias, and gingers.

Your health is our top priority: We have put special measures in place to keep all guests safe both during and after your garden visit.

Stringent Cleaning: We've increased the frequency of disinfecting surfaces of high-traffic areas in our facilities. All buses will be sanitized between each departure. Hand-washing stations are located throughout the gardens and at our Visitor Center.

Social Distancing: Guests will stay a safe 6-foot distance before boarding the bus, while in common areas throughout the garden, and in our visitor center. Guests will stay 10 feet apart from other groups while in McBryde Garden When safety-distancing is not attainable face coverings will be used by all staff and guests. Shields have been installed at our Visitor Center registers. We are limiting the number of guests in our Visitor Center to 10 people at a time. Please adhere to these guidelines and practice safety first. Bus capacity is also limited based on the most current mandates/ordinances.

Wellness: If you or anyone in your group is experiencing symptoms of illness, we will work directly with you to cancel or reschedule your tour. Our family of staff and volunteers are also trained to be aware of symptoms of illness. No one comes to work or to volunteer if they are unwell.

Allerton Garden is a masterpiece of landscape architecture named one of the '50 Places of a Lifetime' by National Geographic Traveler.

Guided tours of Allerton Garden are part garden tour, part art exhibit and entirely unique. Visitors are guided through expertly crafted garden rooms that feature exotic plants, sculptures, and water features.

Allerton Garden also has a rich history as a Hollywood film location for many notable movies and TV shows. See the towering roots of the famous Moreton Bay fig trees featured in blockbusters such as Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Treat yourself and someone you love to a special tour of the Allerton Garden at Sunset. Once a favorite destination of the rich and famous, the Allertons hosted notable individuals, such as Jacqueline Kennedy, in their home and garden.

The Sunset Tour is the only tour that takes visitors through select Allerton Garden rooms and to the house where the Allertons lived.

At the house, visitors will enjoy the Allertons' personal collection of pictures and memorabilia and finish the tour with a meal featuring your choice of four seasonal entrees catered by a local chef. Meals are served in personal bento boxes to enjoy on the stunning lanai amongst ocean breezes before the sun sets into the Pacific.

View select rooms in the Allerton Garden, named one of the '50 Places of a Lifetime' by National Geographic Traveler. Then have a guided experience through our McBryde Garden, an active conservation and research garden with active interpretation and Hawaiian cultural significance.

Join us for an after-hours tour of exploration and discovery that takes place amongst Allerton and McBryde Gardens. Listen to the birds as they sing their sundown songs before their evening rest. Look for night time pollinators. Smell the sweet fragrance of our night blooming flowers. Feel the gardens come alive in a whole new perspective.

Guided by the moonlight each tour is unique and the path will be dependent upon the season, weather, and Mother Nature in her most secretive time, twilight. Unlike any of our other tours, this experience may take guests through normally off limit areas such as the west side of Allerton, the secret garden tunnels and other off the path enchanted trails.

The earliest history of Allerton Garden was intermingled with the upper part of the Lawa'i Valley that is now the McBryde Garden. Both were integral to theahupua'a (land division) of Lawa'i. It was not until well after the arrival of the first Europeans in the late 1700s and the subsequent changes to the traditional Hawaiian way of life that the history of the lower Lawa'i Valley began to diverge from that of the upper valley.
